Samuel Voyer offers his debut album. An opportunity to discover an exceptional pianist and composer whose ten pieces are engraved on 10 000 images. Samuel’s style calls for contemplation, gentleness and relaxation… because we truly need it.

The album
At the source of each composition, we find a wide variety of inspirations. For example, the title The Castle Within was inspired by anthropologist Serge Bouchard: The sad eyes of my truck. The composer tells us about this piece:  “It’s a bit like navigating between two waters, the time is constant and stable, but the melody moves between hope and anxiety. It’s the kind of beauty one feels when one is nostalgic.”. Meltwater, on the other hand, stems from a study of movement. Also on the album, the waltz Silence is inspired by music box melodies and takes the form of a lullaby you might sing to your sleeping child. It took two years to create the song Cosmos 20 which, for Samuel Voyer, evokes what we have been experiencing since the pandemic, when our homes have become, more than ever, our refuge. Finally, it was the song Bang Bang (originally performed by Cher and written by Sonny Bono) that led the Montreal pianist to create the album 10 000 images. The recording took place at Pierre Marchand’s studio, which has hosted artists such as Daniel Bélanger, Beyries, Sarah McLachlan.

The influences
For Voyer, the album 10 000 images is a collection of poems written for the piano. The jazz-trained pianist inscribes his style in the wave of neoclassical music so well represented by Joep Beving, Alexandra Stréliski, Jean-Michel Blais, Ólafur Arnalds, and Nils Frahm. Great composers such as Chopin, Satie and Brad Mehldau also inform his playing.

The collaborators
Nicolas Maranda and Guy Laforce co-produced the album. The cover art is a contribution from internationally renowned artist Nicolas Baier, while the first music video The Castle Within was shot in the Encode Decode installations by technology artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer.

In residency at Arsenal Contemporary Art Montreal
As part of a residency open to the public, Samuel Voyer will be performing from December 12 in the Jardins intérieurs exhibition.
