About
There is a marked freshness, luminosity and glow in Reihsen’s paintings. Confidently pushing the boundaries of the medium, his immersive canvases are tactile and reminiscent of topographical views infused with “acidic rainbows”. Building up his work using neon colors and pastels, made with natural and synthetic polymers, his abstract compositions appear to be lifted from the canvas and result in an optical illusion. By developing a process whereby he creates paintings floating on paintings, using lines, shapes, and smudges, his viewers may experience contracting emotions, as the work appears soft and dreamy yet emotionally charged.
Joe Reihsen was born in 1979 in Minnesota (United States). Graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2008 and the University of California, he lives and works in Los Angeles. His recent exhibitions include: Factory Paint, Aftermarket Interior at Brand New Gallery (Milan, Italy), About Face at The Hole (New York, United States), Being The Seeing at Praz-Delavallade (Paris, France), Fake Tits, Long Hair at Praz-Delavallade (Brussels, Belgium), Aftermarket Interior, Factory Paint at Anat Ebgi (Los Angeles, United States), The Go Between: Works from Ernesto Esposito Collection at the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte (Naples, Italy), Forms of Abstraction, American Abstraction from the 1950s to Today at Dickinson (London, England) and NEXT à Arsenal Contemporary Art Montreal (Canada).
