La Biennale ELEKTRA - ILLUSION

ELEKTRA invites the public to attend this unique networking event  featuring round tables, artists presentations and performances. The International Marketplace for digital art professional component of the Biennale ELEKTRA, the Marché International d'Art Numérique (MIAN), is a not-to-be-missed event in the digital art world. It's an opportunity to get together, stimulate your thoughts and develop your knowledge of digital art.

Since 2007, MIAN has been facilitating professional exchanges between key players in the international digital art and culture ecosystem. Producers and curators from the four corners of the globe will discuss the future of art, and more specifically the place of new technologies in the production and promotion of contemporary digital art.

This year, Arsenal contemporary art Montreal is the main host of the MIAN, presenting 4 various activities within the Biennale ELEKTRA exhibit, and most of them are offered for free - although subscription is required. For more details and MIAN complete offer, follow this link.

Due to the international character of the participants, this panel will take place in English only.

Round table 1 : CURATING IMMERSION
1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

As artists embrace immersive technologies, new and exciting art forms are emerging.  In this panel, curators, and key voices in the field of digital art curation, will discuss best practices for curating and showcasing art in virtual and augmented spaces. How do we distinguish between commercial immersion and immersion that belongs in the context of contemporary art? How can we leverage cutting-edge platforms to offer optimal conditions for presenting art of the current moment? How should we promote and mediate immersive art to engage new and existing audiences?

Round table 2 : THE DIGITAL ART MARKET: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES
3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Every new technology has spawned a cutting edge contemporary art movement that uses and rethinks the novel tools, while also addressing the social, intellectual and aesthetic questions the technology provokes. There is always a lag between artists’ adoption of new technology and its acceptance by art institutions and collectors.  Currently, there is a strong demand for traditional visual art, and paintings in particular, but natively digital art often struggles to find formats and avenues for entering the system. Join us to discuss strategies that will bring institutions and collectors to these emerging art forms, and promote the capacity of sophisticated digital art forms to thrive in the contemporary art market. Why are some collectors less attracted to digital art and how can we change this? How, for example, can we alleviate anxiety about the maintenance and longevity of works? Where are the new collectors - and why? How can we stimulate markets where they don’t yet exist?
